The American Academy of Pediatrics recently published research that supported the use of honey for those pesky nighttime coughs that come with colds. As over the counter cough products become questionable for use in children, research is looking into other alternatives for symptom relief. Now, it seems that a spoonful of honey can help calm that nagging cough.
Children diagnosed with a cold that included a nighttime cough were divided into groups and given one dose of 10 grams of honey, or a placebo, 30 minutes before bed. Cough frequency, severity, and sleep quality were measured. Improvement was greater in the children who received the honey.
Honey is a good and safe alternative to over the counter pharmaceutical cough medicines. Of course, honey is not appropriate for infants, but for your older kids, give it a try!
